Ryukyu Kobudo Hozon Shinko Kai is a society dedicated to preserve and to promote the ancient martial arts of the Ryukyu Islands. It was established by the late Shinken Taira (1897 - 1970) in 1955 and is successor to the "Ryukyu Kobujutsu Kenkyu Kai" founded by Shinken Taira's teacher, the late Moden Yabiku (1878-1941).
Shinken Taira traveled to Tokyo in 1922 and became a Karate student of Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1958). In 1933 he established a branch dojo of Funakoshi's SHOTOKAN in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, and while giving instruction in Karate and Kobujutsu, studied weapons under Kenwa Mabuni (1889-1952).

In 1942, he returned home to Okinawa until the end of the Pacific War. About the same time when the senior Karate practicioners were beginning to establish Dojo amidst the poverty inflicting the island, Shinken Taira, while grieving due to the decline of Ryukyu Kobujutsu, moved forward to establish our association to preserve and promote the ancient weapons art. He became the first president of the RYUKYU KOBUDO HOZON SHINKO KAI, and worked assiduously for its development.

In 1970, after the passing of Taira-Sensei, his top Deshi (disciple), Eisuke Akamine, became the second president of the association. The late Moden Yabiku practiced Yamani-Ryu and was a Deshi immediately following the lineage after Sanda Chinen (Yamani Nusune, 1840-1922). However, before studying with Taira-Sensei, Eisuke Akamine studied under Chinen's Deshi Seichiro Higa (1890-1991), and Yohei Akamine (1904-1989), and was initiated in Sakugawa no Kun, Shushi no Kun, Yonegawa no Kun, and Shirotaru no Kun, all being Bo Kata.

The characteristic style of manipulating the weapons can trace its roots to SHORIN-RYU KARATE, with its emphasis on the swift and "fluid" movement of the hips (Koshi). Primary weapons are the BO and SAI, but over 20 Kobujutsu Kata have been preserved and passed on. Hiroshi Akamine, son of Eisuke Akamine-Sensei, was elected as the third, and is currently president. He continues in the "issho kenmei" (with heart, soul and energy) tradition of his father's great accomplishments. The association has expanded under Hiroshi Akamine's leadership, steadily, to include many international Dojo. The Headquarters Dojo (Hombu) is the SHINBUKAN DOJO in Nesabu, Tomigusuku, Okinawa.
